About Jiangsu

Jiangsu province is situated in the east of China on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, bordering the Huanghai Sea and covering a coastline of over 1,000 kilometers. With a total area of over 102,600 square kilometers and a population of 78.65 million, it is the most density populated province in China. Its population consists of Han, Manchu and other nationalities and its capital is Nanjing.

Situated in a transitional zone between temperate zone and subtropical zone, Jiangsu has a temperate climate, moderate rainfall, and four distinct seasons. In most part of the province the average temperature of January, the coldest month, is between 0°C and 4°C (32°F and 39.2°F), while a temperature between -1°C and 2°C (30.2°F and 35.6°F),in Xuzhou district; the average temperature of July, the warmest month, gradually increases southwards from 26°C to 28°C (78.8°F and 82.4°F).

Education

The education in Jiangsu Province is among the top in China with many famous universities located in Nanjing, Xuzhou, Suzhou and Yangzhou City. Jiangsu Province has the third largest number of international students in China.

Nanjing University

Nanjing University, one of China`s key comprehensive universities under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education, dates from 1902 when it was known as Sanjiang Normal School. During the following decades, it evolved as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, the Fourth Zhongshan University, and National Central University. On August 8, 1949, National Central University was renamed National Nanjing University. In October 1950, as required by the Ministry of Education, the name was changed to Nanjing University (NJU). In 1952, due to the nationwide restructuring of colleges and universities, some academic units such as the School of Engineering and the School of Agriculture were separated from the university; meanwhile, it merged with the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Sciences of the University of Nanking founded in 1888. Its name remained while its campus moved from Sipailou to Gulou.

With its multi-disciplinary programs and distinguished faculty, NJU leads the institutions of higher learning in China. Statistics show that since 1992, the number of research papers by NJU faculty and students on the Science Citation Index (SCI) has ranked the first among universities in Mainland China for seven consecutive years. So did the number of the articles cited by international academic circles for eight years. In the past decade, NJU has won more than 800 national, ministerial and provincial awards, including over 40 National Awards of Natural Sciences, Awards of Science and Technology Progress, and Awards of Innovation. Since 2000, for instance, it has received 11 National Awards of Natural Science (one First Prize, ten Second Prizes) and two of Science and Technology Progress. From 1994 to the present, in terms of the number of the projects granted by the National Natural Sciences Fund and the National Social Sciences Fund, NJU has been among the top in the ranking of the Chinese universities.

Scholarship

In order to further develop higher education of international students, Jiangsu Provincial government especially establishes "Jasmine Scholarship" for international students studying in Jiangsu since the fall semester, 2010.

The Scholarship is used to subsidize those excellent foreign students to accept degree education at Higher Education Institutions in Jiangsu province.

CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY

1. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health.
2. Education background and age limit:
  -Applicants for undergraduate program must have senior high school diploma with good academic performance and be under the age of 25.
  -Applicants for master's degree program must have bachelor's degree and be under the age of 35.
  -Applicants for doctoral degree program must have master's degree and be under the age of 40.
3. Agree to obey the relevant laws of the PRC and meet the admission requirements of the host universities.
4. Applicants must have a good academic record and merits.
5. Applicants should not be awardees of other scholarships offered by Chinese government or local governments at the same time.

FAQ

What is the food like in Jiangsu?

Jiangsu is famous for her "Huaiyang" Cuisine, which is an important part in Chinese government banquet for foreigner leaders. Mainly speaking, the food in south Jiangsu is mild but a pretty salty in the north as it is closer to Shandong Province.

Will it snow a lot in Jiangsu?

Not really. Especially in the south.
